Product Description

Product Description

These passage door latches are constructed of steel and come in a brass plated finish. This latch is designed for indoor use only, and it functions with the use of a spring-loaded square drive spindle at a maximum width and height of 9/32 inch. It is used with antique and vintage door hardware and it features a 2-3/8 inch backset. The latch includes a latch strike and fasteners, but it does NOT include any of the following components and they must be purchased separately: The door knobs, square spindle and rosettes. Note #1: The square drive on this latch has a 9/32 inch opening and a 1/4 inch opening. The maximum square spindle size that this latch will accommodate is 9/32 inch Note #2: This item cannot be used on pre-bored doors that have large, newer style door knob holes without first prepping them to receive this hardware. Installation tip #1: Because the fasteners of the rosettes (purchased separately) require a solid surface to mount to, the large 2-1/8 inch (approximate size) holes must first be filled with a hardening filler, to then be able to receive the rosette fasteners. Products like Fix-It-All® and Bondo Body Filler® have worked well for some, but care must be used to avoid damaging any prefinished door surfaces during application and finishing. Installation tip #2: Apply a small amount of Loctite ThreadLocker 271® to the set screw threads in the event they are loosening – Loctite® purchased separately.

From the Manufacturer

This latch bolt comes in a brass plated finish. It features a square corner faceplate and accepts a 9/32 In. square spindle. Used on old style passage door locksets.

9/32 vs. 5/8
The sketch currently shown as a product photo by Amazon (see my own pic) is accurate for what I received -- a 9/32 spindle is the largest it will accommodate. The product title ("9/32 in. & 5/16 in.") is contradictory and wrong. This worked fine for me, as reviewers had already pointed it out and 9/32 was what I needed. In fact it was a tight 9/32. With a digital caliper, my spindle measured a rather small 9/32. Even at that, the spindle had to be tapped into the socket with a hammer. That was fine, metal was soft. After a few taps in and out, I had a good fit. The latch itself is well designed and well manufactured, works smoothly. Would buy it again.

Was glad to find these .I have some nice antique fired clay(benningtons I think) knobs and latch sets but I didn't want to mortise the doors to use the old latch sets. These seemed to fit the bill perfectly but I was a little concerned because many reviews mentioned older hardware was often not dimensionaly compatible with the new latches so I checked my doorknob shaft and it was close , but definetly smaller than the stated shaft hole of the new latch. I got them and began installing them and they would not slide into the hole . The stated hole dimensions are simply not accurate. Happy ending though as some minimal filing of the old shafts, especially taking off the sharp square corners fixed the problem. I would estimate I filed off about 1/64 "(just a little off each of the 4 sides) for each shaft to fit perfectly so I am quite satisfied , despite the extra work. They slide in and out smoothly with no play. It took probably 5 to 10 minutes to fit each one. They are very high quality latches, and very reasonably priced. If you need to modify your hardware to make them work this is the way I would do it as the old shaft metal will be much softer then the new latch hole metal(if you're thinking of enlarging the hole instead, as it will be hardened steel). A grinder would have been faster but I wanted to take off a minimal amont of meatal. This might not work for everyone but I wanted to include it in the review because so many reviews mentioned this very issue. I'm really happy as I now have some very nice installed knob sets that would probably be $75 dollars if bought new, and I've got just the price of the new latches, about $12 each, into the project as the old knobs were salvage from discarded doors.Took one star off not because the manufaturers latches didn'tfit my 100 year old stuff, which I can understand, but because as several other reviewers have stated, the new latch hole dimensions are not stated accurately.

Worked great on my interior doors which have round knob style handles, but when I tried to use it on a door with a lever style handle the spring action inside was not strong enough to return the handle back up to the starting position on it's own after the handle is pressed down to open the door, and the handle just hangs down in the depressed position. Therefore you must manually lift the handle back up to its starting position EVERY TIME YOU USE IT so that the tongue will eject for the latch to catch and keep the door closed when you go to close it behind you :/

I love my antique door knobs on all my doors. 2 recently stopped functioning. I took pictures of the piece and sent to numerous "locksmiths " who said they specialized in antique knobs. All of them said I would have to replace the entire doorknob. I didn't believe that for a minute and searched online. These fit and work perfectly, what a good price too and no locksmith needed!!!

Well made latch, smooth action, minimal slop. The face plate height was smaller than the Norwalk Lock latch I was replacing; 2-1/4 vs 2-9/16 inch. The mounting hole spacing was smaller than the Norwalk Lock latch I was replacing (1 31/32 inch) but otherwise it was an suitable replacement. The mechanism design looks like it will last longer than the Norwalk latch and the striker feels substantial. Comes with 4 Phillips head screws, about #8 x 3/4 inch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for fluted door knobs
Reviewed in Canada on August 3, 2021
Color Name: classic bronzeSize Name: 9/32 in.Verified Purchase
I have an older door from around the late 1800s to early 1900s, all thick and heavy wood, the latch hole was cut out wrong and previous home owners just decided not to ever fix it because who cares about privacy? Any way I managed to get it in the door and attached a fluted door knob, works great although I suggest having proper tools before installation, it’s not hard but to help prevent damage to your door it’s probably best you do some research first.
