Easy to install and constructed of durable solid brass, the 4 inch long surface bolt can be mounted horizontally or vertically and includes a surface mount keeper and a mortise-style keeper to accommodate a variety of applications. With a satin nickel finish, the surface bolt is not only effective, it’s attractive too. It’s a great alternative to traditional child (and pet) proofing products that can be hard to install and not complementary to your home décor. You can install the surface bolt out of the reach of curious little hands, so babies, toddlers and young kids cannot enter or exit into dangerous areas or go through cabinets and closets without supervision.

I purchased 4 of these for our house. They are great!! Mounted some of them vertically and some horizontally, works great both ways. I needed them for extra toddler safety since mine is capable of unlocking both the bolt and door lock. When Mounted at the top they are unreachable by little hands and give me peace of mind. They were used on interior and exterior doors and work well on both.

After reading some of the reviews here, I nearly decided against these surface bolts. I've used Prime-Line products before and have always had a good experience. I am refinishing all of the interior doors in my home. I changed the color of my hardware and that facilitated changing out the old surface bolts that I had installed on my three sets of double doors. Just 15 minutes ago, I installed the first of the three and everything went as expected. All of the negative reviews written were not representative of my experience. I think that many times people have no idea how to properly install stuff like this. Take your time, make sure measurements are correct, drill PILOT holes and then install. I used my power impact driver with no problem, but if you have trouble controlling power tools I would suggest driving the screws by hand, it would be easy to strip out the small screw heads. The hardware installed easily and works very well. I know that there can be an occasional bad unit, but in my case it all worked very well. If I have any issues installing the other two sets, I will come and edit this review.

If you pencil out the location, pre-drill holes w/ 1/16" bit, do not use drill to tighten screws, and have proper 2 small size chisels, this were easy to install and look nice. They operate well too. Esp like having both plates for inside, or outside frame installation. If you do not pre-drill holes, or use too large drill bit, or try to use drill to tighten the screws, you increase your chances of screwing it up. I saw some reviews about how screws were too small... they are just right for a non-security installation if installed properly. I bought two. I also have a 3rd exterior french door I needed this for, yet I bought the $38 one on Amazon that is heavy duty.

The latch itself looks great, but the screws that came with it make it unusable. Unfortunately, I put in the first screw without checking- because WHY would one need to check if the hardware provided would fit where it's supposed to? Shouldn't that already be the case?
I took out the screw and the latch and simply placed the screw in the hole and tried to slide the latch over it. Sure enough, the screw is too thick on top to let the bolt slide over it. GREAT... I love that I put a hole in my door that now won't hold anything.

Don't buy this.
