The Hardware Essentials Swinging Door Latch is a heavy duty latch designed for in and out swinging doors 3/4" to 2-1/4" thick. Ideal for use on sheds, barns, storage bins and other residential and agricultural applications. Automatically latches when door is closed. Includes a separate bracket that is used to hold open doors. Can be used for right or left hand applications and in or out-swinging doors. Can be pad locked for additional security.

Installed on tall perfectly finnished wooden gate. The frame of the fence is constructed with 2x4 and the 4in wood frame was not enough depth for the main lock - looks like 5in of wood is enough for attachment. It installed well, very solid after installation. I would like it to close smoother but the spring mechanism will likely loosen after some use, hopefully... Solid locking action is nice feature. I don't exactly like the black finish looks cheep when you inspect closely. I would have considered couple coats of nice quality spray paint but it's workable. Its a solid option and looks clean.

 I bought two of these for use on my homestead. The one of the video I installed on my chicken coop and the other I installed on the chicken run. They fit perfectly through the 1.5 inch thick side of a 2x4. I like them so much that I plan to order this style to replace my nesting box latches as well. Carabiner not included. The whole where I put my carabiner is sufficient for most padlocks. Note: if you put a lock or a carabiner on this while you have the door open, and then you go inside and pull the door shut, you can lock yourself in if you're building design does not include an escape path.

Lowes sells a better Latch, this one is not pre greased so it squeaks and binds in the first week. as well the receiver is blunt ended so it does not close by itself so if you think this will work with self closing hinges think again. Its heavy duty would be good for maybe a barn door that you dont care if it squeaks and is hard to turn
